Open year-round but less visited than Yala which isn’t, is the 62sq km Bundala National Park also known as Bundala Sanctuary. Often overlooked as a park in which crocodiles, elephants and other mammals can be studied, Bundala (between Hambantota and Tissamaharama) is predominantly famed for its rich and varied birdlife and therefore popular amongst local and visiting ‘birders’. Sri Lanka’s tropical island climate and diverse terrain provides sanctuary for around 400 species of birdlife of which 21 are said to be unique to the country. Bundala’s own matrix of water tributaries, lagoons and wetlands provide home for about 150 species with Flamingos a popular attraction. However, it is the sheer concentration of so many different birds in one place that attracts the real enthusiast, from tiny Bee eaters to the large billed Stalks. A great time to visit Bundala is during the wet season when the birdlife is at its most spectacular. Buckingham Place staff will happily arrange for you to visit Bundala during your stay.
